Rachel was my babysitter; my parents both advised her before she left for Gaza... their names are in her diaries. Her death was maybe the first I'd experienced. I remember only sadness, confusion, and the feeling of injustice. As a 5 or 6 year old I asked for her name to become my middle name, with her parents' blessing. I am eternally grateful to be from Olympia, it can't be understated how radicalizing Rachel's murder and ensuing cover-up (no legal retribution, Evergreen withholding the diploma from her parents, not letting a ceremony be held on campus) was for the whole town. I just turned 23, the age Rachel was when she was killed. All I can hope is to be as brave and compassionate as her. Rachel, everything we do is in your memory.
